The Steam Frame VR Headset is Valve’s second VR device, released six years after the launch of the Valve Index. This standalone VR headset is the first virtual reality device to run SteamOS, offering full compatibility with the Steam library — allowing you to enjoy both VR and non-VR games seamlessly.
VR and non-VR gaming with Steam Store
With its customized SteamOS, the headset can function either as a fully standalone VR device or as a PCVR headset with unlimited access to the PC game library. You can play both VR and non-VR games directly on the headset. Valve will continue adding more Verified titles to ensure optimal compatibility with the headset, similar to the certification system used on the Steam Deck.
Comfortable – Easy to Use
The Steam Frame weighs only 440g and features a streamlined, ergonomic design that evenly distributes weight between the front and back, ensuring long-lasting comfort during extended use.
As a fully standalone headset, it’s ready to wear and use instantly—no messy or inconvenient cable setup required.

Wireless Adapter
The dual-channel 6GHz Wireless Adapter is the included dongle that plugs into your PC, Steam Machina, or Steam Deck to stream content to the headset for PCVR gameplay and other media. Its ultra-compact design supports two separate channels—one for transmitting data to the headset and one for maintaining your home Wi-Fi connection—ensuring stable performance without bandwidth interference.
Foveated Streaming
Foveated Streaming is a new feature that optimizes detail where your eyes are looking, and typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth. Behind the scenes, we’re using low-latency eye tracking data to steer the best quality pixels only to where you’re looking. This is all happening without you noticing, and works for your entire Steam library.
Pancakes Lenses
Of course. As a premium VR headset released in 2026, the Frame is equipped with high-end pancake lenses similar to those on the Meta Quest 3. It features LCD displays with a resolution of 2160 × 2160 per eye and a refresh rate ranging from 72 to 144Hz.
Tracking inside-out
The Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset, which means it uses inside-out tracking with four built-in cameras instead of the Base Station tracking system used in previous VR devices.
Its four high-resolution cameras, combined with integrated infrared LEDs, allow the headset to track accurately even in low-light environments, ensuring comfortable and reliable use in various lighting conditions.
A Premium Experience on Steam Frame
Drawing on its experience with stable, long-lasting hardware like the Valve Index and Steam Deck, Valve has integrated numerous new technologies into the Steam Frame to enhance comfort and deliver an even more premium VR experience.
Immersive Audio
Each side of the headset features a pair of stereo speakers, positioned in a mirrored configuration to deliver more realistic audio without interfering with the headset’s tracking sensors.
Plug and Play
Featuring a smart sleep mode similar to the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch, you can simply put on the headset and start using it instantly—no tedious setup required.
Simple Feature-Rich Controllers
The Steam Frame controllers follow the design trend of high-end VR headsets in 2025. However, their button layout is more akin to a traditional gamepad, allowing you to seamlessly switch and play both VR and non-VR games directly on the headset.
Magnectic thumbsticks
The Steam Frame controllers feature next-generation magnetic analog sticks, similar to the Steam Controller, offering improved precision along with capacitive finger sensors.
Easy-to-Replace Controller Batteries
The Steam Frame controllers use AA batteries, providing up to 40 hours of continuous use. When the batteries run out, they can be easily replaced in a single simple step.
*It is recommended to use high-quality or rechargeable batteries and avoid cheap zinc-carbon batteries to prevent leakage during use.
Compatible with Valve’s Steam Hardware Ecosystem
The Steam Frame easily pairs with the Steam Controller, displaying a virtual controller within the VR environment.
Using content from a Steam Machine, Steam Deck, laptop, or PC, it lets you fully immerse yourself in any game of your choice.
